Argentinian politics take an oxymoron turn

Oxymoron is a great word, amongst my favourites. As good as ‘transmogrify’ and ‘discombobulate’.

Unusually, I have been given the opportunity to use all three words in one post thanks to the result in Argentina in the election of President.

Readers may have noted the successful election of Javier Milei. The thumping majority he gained discombobulated me. I was hopeful but not confident that he would win, but he romped home with a massive result.

His policy ideas, if implemented, will transmogrify the Argentine for the better. Once, Argentina had the world’s highest GDP per capita. Back then, Australia was second. Milei is described by the political, institutional and media class as a dangerous far right clown, a threat to democracy. So clearly, he is made of the right stuff. His policy ideas include scrapping the central bank. Hooray. He is fervently anti woke. I wish we had a successful politician in Australia with the same ideas. Milei is the closest that I have ever seen to a political version of Murray N. Rothbard.

Now to the oxymoron description. Milei self describes as anarcho-capitalist and libertarian. Yet he has successfully won the top political Governmental role. How is this possible? How to complete the circle of anarcho-capitalism and President?

Giorgia Meloni won the top political spot in Italy on a similar platform then became captured by the political elite cobweb that binds them to inaction.

I hope Javier Milei is made of sterner stuff than Meloni.
