Australian energy mix, summer 2024

Summer, the 3 months from the solstice to the equinox, has just ended in the southern hemisphere. How did Australia generate its electricity over that time? With renewables?

70% generated by coal and gas. For all the hot headed blowhards spouting their windy verbiage about solar and wind, hey Minister Bowen I’m thinking about you, 24% was that contribution.

Meanwhile, the AEMO is warning that the country may have to resort to burning diesel to make up for a looming gas shortage.

There’s a lesson there but it’s not clear if it will be heard by those pulling the levers. For all the fossil fuels required to make, install and maintain solar panels and windmills, the renewable energy industry has already passed Net Zero on the way down and is becoming increasingly negative every year.
